Dhaka, Jan 28: Striker Kanchan’s struck helped Muktijoddha to back on the top of the points table of Grameenphone Bangladesh League when they defeated Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club 1-0 in the sixth round at the BSSM Mostafa Kamal Stadium today.
The traditional black and white, who were always title aspiration of the Bangladesh league, received their third consecutive defeats in this league as they were beat by Rahamatganj and Brothers Union last two matches.
The game started with high tempo and both teams were brave to attack but not organised. The Mukti took the upper hand in the first half with some domination in the midfielder and they got the result within 33 minutes of the match.
Veteran Kanchan, who took parts his first match of the league, scored the all important goal for the freedom fighters in the 33th minute when he headed home from a rebound ball off rival goalkeeper Titi shot by Zahed.
The loser created several chances to level the match but all their efforts went into vain due to lack of good finishers.
Mohammedan’s best chance came in the 87th minute, when left back Yeasin’s long distance shot saved by Goalkeeper Biplob giving a corner.
Earlier, Biplob also saved Mukti from a suicide goal while rival Roni’s crossed back headed by fellow defender Emmanuel Dami’s entering into the post . Biplob stopped the ball just about two feet to cross the goal line.
The all reds score could be double the score but their Nigerian striker Bukola missed twice even found rival goal keeper Titu lonely in the 58th minute and extra time of second half. Kanchan also missed an easy opportunity in the 9th minute as his shot crossed over the bar from Bukola’s cutback.
Mohammedan coach Safukul Islam Manik sent some attacking players in the second half, but an in-form Biplob denied all their efforts.
After this win, Muktijoddha is leading the table with 15 points having five wins and one loss while Mohammedan kept nine points with three wins and same number of defeats.
Muktijoddha coach Maruf was confident on win as he gave rest his goal machine Mithun, leading scorer in this league, against Mohammedan. “We have many scorers in the team. We have to give them chances. So, Kanchan played today and scored the winning goal. And I am happy with team’s total performance. They lost many chances but they were parts of game.” said former Mohammedan’s coach.
Mohammedan coach Manik was not disappointed with his boys after three consecutive defeats. “I am satisfied with my boys’ performance. They are still young and have a chance to return winning stream. Big big teams in the world tasted consecutive defeat and they came back winning track later. Hope, we will also come back winning track soon. League still not finish, we have many matches. So, I am not disappointed,” said former national team coach.
